The use of laparoscopic ultrasound for detection of biliary calculi has been shown to be more accurate at detecting biliary calculi with higher sensitivity and fewer false positives than operative cholangiography, in experienced hands.  In addition, it is safer than operative cholangiogram for patients and the OR team and provides a reduction in theatre time, thus incurring a demonstrable cost saving.

This one day workshop, Laparoscopic Biliary Ultrasound and Stone Management Course, will combine live operative demonstrations with seminars to cover interpretation of ultrasound images, tips for use in biliary surgery and expert demonstrations of bile duct exploration and stone extraction.  The expert faculty will include Mr Jonathan Ockrim (Consultant Surgeon, Yeovil District Hospital), Mr Grant Sanders (Consultant Surgeon, Plymouth Hospitals) and Ms Sally Norton (Consultant Surgeon, North Bristol NHS Trust).

Audience:    Consultant general surgeons and senior trainees who routinely perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Course Aim - at the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • discuss the benefits of the use of laparoscopic biliary ultrasound
  • describe the basic physics of ultrasound
  • interpret laparoscopic biliary ultrasound images
  • debate live demonstrations of technique
  • form a plan for introduction of laparoscopic ultrasound into their own surgical practice

This event will be supported by BK Medical.
